recaps reviews news cast 82 January 5, 2022January 5, 2022 Our Beloved Summer Episodes 9-10 Open Thread by missvictrix After their passionate rain-drenched encounter, our couple starts off on a new foot. But itâs not the foot we might have expected. This new designation is full of as much confusion and refusal to be honest as weâve come to expect from this pair. Their mouths say one thing; their hearts say another. EPISODES 9-10 WEECAP Much to my chagrin and also amusement, because the drama loves to not tell us things, we expressly donât pick up with the beautiful kiss scene where we ended last week. We donât even check in with our leads in a meaningful way, either. Instead, we head first to our trusty second lead, Ji-woong. Ji-woongâs story continues to resonate with me, though. We see the wall he put up years ago, to not only hide his feelings for Yeon-su from both her and Woong, but also from himself. The narration is great here â we get insight into his âtacticsâ like avoiding chance encounters with her, resisting his urge to be in her sphere, and basically renouncing all things Yeon-su. He says that sheâs a risk he canât control. But at the same time, we see how current circumstances are pushing him towards her again, and it feels very much like the energy heâs spent on renunciation is starting to weigh him down. This part of the story is so well told; Iâm just loving it. Finally, we return to our leads, but we donât get much â itâs just drama fevers and sleepless nights all around. Our only clue is Yeon-su fleeing the scene, and running into Ji-woong on the hilltop. What happened before? After? In between? Will the drama ever tell us? Woong has his fever, is comforted by his mother so touching and lovely!, and in the end, comes to a conclusion as he exits his cave. âI canât go on without her in my life.â What a gorgeous line. However, he also refuses to date her to her face! and has a bit of a wild suggestion âShould we be friends?â Actually, the friends zone doesnât strike me as a terrible idea for these two right now if it means some actual communication, but it comes at a horrid time for Yeon-su. Sheâs been doing her own navel-gazing and had marched over to Woongâs house to ostensibly confess. Or something. At least she knows she has feelings for him, and has admitted it both to herself, and to Sol-yi. And with that, my friends, the trolling begins! Rather than balk too much, Yeon-su becomes Woongâs âfriendâ as if someone flipped a switch. She trolls him to death, calling him âchingu-ya,â inviting herself to sleep over, borrowing his clothes, and basically trying to drive Woong crazy. Her real plan, of course, is to find out what he really feels while being friends. Theyâre even âcaughtâ by Ji-woong during their weird platonic sleepover, and itâs a little hilarious. Yeon-su eventually goes home, and sheâs replaced by Ji-woong heâd die if he knew he was taking her place on the couch, and using the same blankets she used the night before. Poor Ji-woong is turned upside down by the arrival of his wayward mother; he also has a work hoobae that adores him, but he canât seem to notice. Yeon-su invents a silly excuse to return to Woongâs house to retrieve her âprecious pouch,â cementing the fact for us and her that sheâs really crushing on him. But itâs Woong that winds up bringing the pouch to her, and after an awkward dinner with granny omg the zucchini, Yeon-su and Woong actually have what Iâm considering their first truly authentic moment together. Theyâre outside of her house, and Woong rubs his belly, complaining how much he ate. The two share a giggle and a nice moment, and itâs just lovely. However, Woongâs takeaway is that they can be friends, while Yeon-suâs is how much she truly likes him. As ever, these two are not on the same page. It wasnât until that precious moment Yeon-su shares with her granny that the episodeâs focus on maternal comfort really hit me. Earlier we saw Woong nursed by his mother and the tender moments they shared; now, we see the same with Yeon-su and her own mother figure, and itâs just as precious. Then thereâs the contrast, and thatâs Ji-woong. Heâs the character thatâs missing that nurturing and affection, and itâs really starting to show how much itâs affected him. We see the difficult times he had in the past, and how he always relied on crashing with Woong to escape dealing with his mother. I love these two boys as friends and how they support each other as much as they razz each other. We see Woong offering a lending ear to Ji-woong in the present, but importantly, Ji-woong also confesses a bit of his trials to Yeon-su as the episode closes. Itâs his birthday, heâs just had a heartbreaking cry because his mother doesnât even remember that heâs deathly allergic to peaches, and when he accidentally encounters Yeon-su in the street, he canât hold back. Itâs a direct contrast to how we opened the earlier episode how he avoids her, and opening up to her. Now, finally, he does just that. And though weâre not quite sure where it will lead yet, surely itâs a good thing for this boy to start addressing all the stuff that has been weighing down his heart. After Annie Hall, the romcom was never the same again... and neither was Woody Allenâs April 2017By Leigh SingerAnnie Hall 1977 âA relationship, I think, is like a shark, you know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands, is a dead shark.â â Alvy Singer, Annie Hall It would be an exaggeration to say that, 40 years ago, a dead shark was the appropriate metaphor for Woody Allenâs relationship to cinema. Yet clearly, despite the successes of inventive, sketch-like, punchline-driven comedies, such as Bananas 1971, Sleeper 1973 and Love and Death 1975, Allen â then in his early 40s â felt ready to tackle something different, something deeper. The result was Annie Hall, a critical and commercial hit, and winner of four Oscars including best picture. To this day, itâs either his very best film or one of the top few â depending on your preference. Itâs stuffed with classic Allen one-liners, and, in the cocaine sneezeâ scene, one of the all-time great visual gags. Get the latest from the BFISign up for BFI news, features, videos and podcasts. But it also represented a sudden, supremely confident flexing of Allenâs directorial muscles. This highly personal, moving, doomed love affair signalled Allenâs new commitment to more mature moviemaking. Yet it almost all never happened. Only with drastic recalibration did Allen, assisted by editor Ralph Rosenblum â whose book When the Shooting Stops offers a fascinating account of the process â transform an epic, sprawling project entitled Anhedonia the inability to experience pleasure into the streamlined, groundbreaking Annie Hall. In the process, Allen redefined himself as a filmmaker â and changed the face of romantic comedy to boot. Annie Hall 1977 Here are five reasons to celebrate Woody Allenâs consummate ânervous romanceâ. 1. It broke the romcom rules and the fourth wall As with many film genres in the golden age of 1970s cinema, the romcom got a long overdue makeover. Annie Hall rejected its tried-and-tested feelgood fantasies for a spikier, more grounded take on romantic love. Annie and Alvyâs bittersweet parting blazed a trail for less upbeat, more unsettled endings, which are now fairly commonplace within the genre â see My Best Friendâs Wedding 1997, Chasing Amy 1997 and 500 Days of Summer 2009. Annie Hall also reinvigorated the romcom stylistically, unleashing a dazzling array of innovations â achronological storytelling, split-screen scenes, thought-subtitles â to help excavate the nitty-gritty emotions underneath idealised notions of romance. And, by regularly breaking the fourth wall by directly addressing the audience from the very first scene, including the celebrated intervention of media theorist Marshall McLuhan to castigate a pontificating bore in a cinema queue, Allen added a layer of delightful, insightful self-awareness to the mix. Annie Hall 1977 2. It initiated a more personal style of filmmaking Woody Allen had long established his comic persona â a nebbish, neurotic, narcissistic, albeit very funny New Yorker â but here he meant more than ever to connect this to his own personal predilections. The filmâs original concept was a stream-of-consciousness-type experience, largely set within his own mind hence the blithe to-camera asides, addressing his own fears and fantasies. Allen even looked back at his own Brooklyn upbringing and early family life, shooting in his own childhood haunts. If Anhedoniaâs extended interior monologue conceit is largely sidelined in Annie Hallâs final version, this first-person perspective surely isnât. Allen drew directly from his and Diane Keatonâs own romantic relationship and the obstacles they faced their disparate backgrounds, personalities, ambitions and, ultimately, couldnât overcome. Though presumably enhanced by crackerjack gags, the willingness to delve deep inside his own life experiences gave the film a newfound authenticity and depth that Allen continued to develop. Annie Hall 1977 3. It inspired Woody Allenâs drive to write great female roles Diane Keaton had co-starred in Allenâs two previous films, Sleeper and Love and Death, establishing herself as a deft comedian with a kooky sensibility and offbeat comic timing. But these roles were largely foils for Allenâs protagonist. Annie Hall, however, tailored specifically for her by Allen, is far more substantial. Itâs not just Keatonâs distinctive fashion sense, passionate complexity or dreamy delivery âLa-di-daâŠâ Annie is so vivid, appealing and fascinating that Allen recut the film to focus on scenes featuring their relationship. Annie Hall 1977 For Allen himself it was a major breakthrough, giving him the confidence to write a roster of great female roles throughout the rest of his career. To date, actresses have received an impressive 13 Oscar nominations in his films, including six wins â starting with Diane Keaton maiden name Hall and her wonderful performance here. 4. It allowed Allen to experiment and find his cinematic voice The overriding lesson of Annie Hall? Less is more. Anhedoniaâs first cut was two hours, 20 minutes long and included novel but distracting asides. These included a spoof black-and-white sci-fi film, The Invasion of the Element, about a black family new to the neighbourhood, and even a TV show that talks back to viewers, which sounds suspiciously like a precursor for the cinema/auditorium interactions in 1985âs The Purple Rose of Cairo. Ruthlessly paring away great comic material, Allen was encouraged to stay with the storyâs most emotional arc, Alvy and Annieâs love affair. Reshoots pushed the film further in this direction, and the poignant closing montage, cut to the song Seems like Old Timesâ, plus Allenâs final voiceover, were late, improvised additions that beautifully chime with the filmâs melancholy ending. These radical changes seemed inevitable for a film now reworked and â thankfully â retitled, with apt simplicity, Annie Hall. Annie Hall 1977 5. It shaped Allenâs most successful future films Had Annie Hall not succeeded, itâs hard to imagine Woody Allen taking as many future risks as he did. His very next film, Interiors 1978, was a sombre, Bergman-esque drama. And those regularly considered his best â say, Manhattan 1979 or Hannah and Her Sisters 1986 â are exquisite blends of rapid-fire humour and slow-dawning horror of the emotional damage we inflict on ourselves and one another. Besides, the shaggier version of what became Annie Hall didnât all go to waste. The excised whodunit subplot became 1993âs Manhattan Murder Mystery. As for Anhedoniaâs original pitch, the âsurrealistic and abstract adventures of a neurotic Jewish comedian reliving his highly flawed life and in the process satirising much of our cultureâ, well, switch âcomedianâ for âfilm directorâ and isnât that basically the synopsis for 1980âs Stardust Memories, the one where aliens express a preference for Allenâs characterâs âearly, funnyâ films?

Summary and Analysis for the film â500 Days of Summerââ500 Days of Summerâ is a film based on the relationship between a man and a woman in their mid-twenties. In the opening seen, the omniscient narrator warns the audience of the outcome of the story by stating, âThis is not a love story.â The main characters, Tom and Summer, both work at a Greeting Card Company. Summer is a new employee, and Tom begins to fall in love with her quirky personality and physical attractiveness. Summer only wants to be Tomâs friend with no commitments, but she treats him as if she has more intentions. Tom and Summer become the best of friends, but they also act as if they are lovers. Because of this, Tom begins to fall even more in love with Summer. Summer tells Tom that they should have distance after a while but throws in the phrase, âBut you are still my best friend.â This breaks Tomâs heart. After some time, Tom meets with her again, and he still has hope that they will end up together. To his disappointment, he finds that she is in engaged to another man. Towards the end of the film, Summer finds Tom at the park, and she tells him that she is now married. At the very end, Tom is attending a job interview, and he asks a girl on a date whoâs name coincidently happen to be âAutumnâ.The whole movie is based on what is going on in Tomâs mind. Christopher Orr observes in Atlantic magazine says, âWe see the central relationship through Tomâs eyes exclusively, with Summer ultimately remaining as unknowable to us as she is to him.â Tom never gives up on believing that he and Summer were meant to have a fantasy kind of love until he finally encounters Summer as an engaged woman. He only rides on the highs of the relationship, and this leads to his own downfall. Tom wonât accept Summerâs lack of commitment and desire to be in a true romantic relationship. Orr summarizes this by saying,âWe leap from Day 28 to Day 303 to Day 167 to Day 408, oscillating between early hope and ultimate despair, the sudden, unbidden revelation of love and the slow, crushing realization that it is not requited.âDespite the film having two main characters, the cinematography only correlates with the emotions of Tom. The relationship between Tom and Summer is very confusing and uncertain, and Tomâs emotion with is a dizzy roller coaster. Orr says in his article, â Itâs been some time since Iâve seen a film that captures with such immediacy the elation and anxiety of new love, the tingle and the terror, the profound sense that you have never been more alive and the occasional wish that you could die on the spot.â The cinematography displays all of Tomâs conflicts with the different styles of images within the flashbacks, drawings, music, and picture. When Tom is high on the idea of love, the colors of the film are brighter. Summerâs wardrobe always consists of blue, like the color of her eyes, until the end when she is married and she is wearing gray. The blue clothing is a reference to the way that Tom is caught up in the appearance and beauty in the idea of Summer. In his mind he is under the illusion that she is âthe one.â There are many ways to interpret the whole psychological theme of the film, but the general theme is that loving someone doesnât necessarily mean that it is âmeant to beâ between you and that film is directed towards the complications and inconsistency of a relationship. It shies away from the typical Hollywood theme that âlove is a fantasy,â and directs itself towards the reality that a relationship doesnât always turn out the way a person intends it to.
